Drug cartels have been smuggling drugs across the border for decades, and a wall will not be able to stop them. Supporters argue one of the main reasons Trump should build his wall is because a wall will end the drug problem that the United States is facing at this time. For instance, Trump himself believes that his wall will be able to stop the “bad” Mexicans from entering the United states; he mentioned that in his controversial statement calling Mexicans rapists and criminals (Markusoff par. 1). However, President Trump fails to realize that there are a multitudinous amount of other ways for the drug cartels to smuggle drugs into the United States-- most of which are not even by going over the southern border. For instance, in 2011, a drug-smuggling tunnel was found in San Diego that stretched 600 miles into Mexico; this tunnel was used by drug cartels to send large quantities of drugs, mostly marijuana and cocaine, across the border (Dillon, Liam, and Ian Lovett par. 1). Moreover, this tunnel is one of the largest that has been found to this date(Dillon, Liam, and Ian Lovett par. 1). Drug cartels make large sums of money by exporting their product over the border, and with the money that the cartels make from drug trafficking, they spare no expense to figure out a way to get their drugs across the border. The Mexican drug kingpins will not stop exporting their drugs to American soil because of a wall that is above the border-- they have tunnels that would run underneath that wall. Trump does not realize that even the border patrol agents know that the southern border is riddled with tunnels underneath the border. For instance, border patrol agent Philipe Jimenez actually joked that “one of these days the whole city is going to drop 15 feet because their are so many tunnels” (Richey, Warren. “Terror and the Mexico Border" par. 26). Although this border agent is joking, the fact still remains that because of the tunnels under the border, there is no way to completely seal it. Moreover, the drug cartels make too much money to be able to stop with a wall. As specified by Laura Duffy, the United States attorney for the region of San Diego,''These cartels have spent years and tens of millions of dollars trying to create a secret underworld of passages so they can move large quantities of drugs''(Dillon, Liam, and Ian Lovett par. 4).Duffy insists that the cartels spend millions of dollars to find ways to get their drugs into America. If Trump’s wall manages to be able to completely block the drug cartels from bringing drugs into America, the cartels will still find a way to get their narcotics into the country because of the amount of money the drug cartels are willing to invest into doing so. In addition to the cartels using their money to invent new ways to get into America, they also use their money to bribe border patrol agents. The bribery of American border patrol agents is an obstacle that the federal government has been facing for years. For instance, in 2012, Joohoon David Lee, a federal Homeland Security agent, was investigating a case that involved a Korean businessman who was involved in a sex trafficking case, and instead of carrying out the investigations, Mr. Lee chose to take 13,000 dollars worth of bribes to make the case go away (Nixon, Ron. “The Enemy Within: Bribes Bore a Hole in the U.S. Border” par. 2). There are hundreds of cases like this one that have corrupted the United States’ illegal immigration system. In fact, in 2008 alone, there were 200 open cases that investigated corruption on the southern border (Archibold and Becker par. 6). Unless President Trump’s wall manages to fix the corruption that is on the southern border, the drug smuggling will not be stopped. Moreover, when the wall’s supporters argue the the wall will stop drug trafficking into the United States, they are sorely mistaken because the drug cartels have the money to corrupt any weak, money-hungry agent on the border. While the drug cartels are making money by selling their drugs on American soil, America will be losing billions because their president thinks that Mexico will pay for the wall. Supporters of the wall believe President Trump when he explains to his fans that Mexico will pay for the wall: “They don’t know it yet, but they will” (Markusoff par. 1). However, President Trump has not given any evidence to explain the ways Mexico will pay for the wall. Furthermore, one day after Trump won the election, Claudia Riuz Massieu, Mexico’s Foreign Minister, told Mexican television that Mexico will not pay for the wall if President Trump builds one (Markusoff par. 2). Mexico’s resilience to pay for the wall can be seen in a more extreme fashion when Vicente Fox, former Mexican President, said, “I'm not going to pay for that f--king wall" (Markusoff par. 2). Because of reactions of Mexico’s Foreign Minister and former president, to make an assertion that Mexico, as of now, will not be paying for the wall would definitely be an accurate statement. Nonetheless, President Trump has mentioned that construction on the south will start by using taxpayer money to “speed up the process” (Shear and Huetteman par. 7). If the president is so sure that Mexico will pay for the wall, then he should start billing Mexico now-- not American citizens. Even though President Trump believes that Mexico will pay for the wall, the fact is clear that Mexico will not. With that, the American citizens should not be obligated to pay for a wall that the majority of the citizens do not even want.
