While the drug cartels are making money by selling their drugs on American soil, America will be losing billions because their president thinks that Mexico will pay for the wall. Supporters of the wall believe President Trump when he explains to his fans that Mexico will pay for the wall: “They don’t know it yet, but they will” (Markusoff par. 1). However, President Trump has not given any evidence to explain the ways Mexico will pay for the wall. Furthermore, one day after Trump won the election, Claudia Riuz Massieu, Mexico’s Foreign Minister, told Mexican television that Mexico will not pay for the wall if President Trump builds one (Markusoff par. 2). Mexico’s resilience to pay for the wall can be seen in a more extreme fashion when Vicente Fox, former Mexican President, said, “I'm not going to pay for that f--king wall" (Markusoff par. 2). Because of reactions of Mexico’s Foreign Minister and former president, to make an assertion that Mexico, as of now, will not be paying for the wall would definitely be an accurate statement. Nonetheless, President Trump has mentioned that construction on the south will start by using taxpayer money to “speed up the process” (Shear and Huetteman par. 7). If the president is so sure that Mexico will pay for the wall, then he should start billing Mexico now-- not American citizens. Even though President Trump believes that Mexico will pay for the wall, the fact is clear that Mexico will not. With that, the American citizens should not be obligated to pay for a wall that the majority of the citizens do not even want. The amount of money that the wall will cost the American taxpayer is colossal. Trump believes that the wall will cost an astounding 5 to 10 billion dollars; however, analysts agree that if President Trump decides to proceed with the building on the wall although Mexico will not pay for the wall, the estimated cost to the American taxpayers is around 25 billion (Markusoff par. 4). Indeed, 25 billion dollars is the amount of money President Trump is willing to spend on a wall that will not even be effective. To put that into perspective, according to a study published in “Trump Insists Mexico Will Pay for the Wall After U.S. Begins Work” written by Michael Shear and Emmarie Huetteman, “The Government Accountability Office has estimated it could cost $6.5 million per mile to build a single-layer fence, with an additional $4.2 million per mile for roads and more fencing”(par. 9).That calculates to be around 13 billion to build a single layer fence. To add the addition fencing and road the cost racks up to 20 billion dollars of taxpayer money. That money could go to countless other organizations that actually benefit the American people.
