When Beyonce's album Lemonade was released in 2016 there was no surprise when it went platinum. In Guy Dixons “Beyonce’s Lemonade as an A+ Essay,” he explains how the divas album is written as exceptional essay. Dixon uses the “Queen of Pop’s” album as an example that writing can she transferred into many other forms of communication. He describes Beyonce’s Lemonade as a well-crafted, well-organized essay. Dixon is correct when stating that developing writing skills is one of the most important skills learned at college; he is also correct when mentioning that storytelling is crucial in a well-crafted essay. Beyonces album Lemonade is crafted as a well built essay, according to Globe and Mail author Guy Dixon. The album makes visualizing the life of a young woman clear and concise. Her album is, according to Katherine Acheson, professor of English and the associate dean of arts, undergraduate programs at the University of Waterloo, “a rich mass of information that is organized in a way that you can’t avoid feeling it. You can’t avoid knowing more after you’ve gone through it” (qdt in Dixon par. 4). Dixon goes on to explain that researchers believe that the skills involved in writing an essay are ones that can be transferred into other aspects of life (par. 7). Along with that, writing pairs well with the ability to read well (par. 9). According to Sue Laver, director of McGill University’s Writing Centre in Montreal, the amount of time put into mastering the art of communication writing is one of the best skills that can be learned at a university (par 15). There is more to writing than to write for a professor; students need to be able to write to a larger audience because the amount of writing needed in many careers has grown exponentially. Dixon explains that nowadays, university professors are making their students compose more varied assignments compared to what was traditional a generation ago (par 15). Although there are more types of essays written by students today, the basics are still the same. Great essays come down to two basic necessities: organization and structure. Along with those basic necessities, an important part of essay writing is connecting with the audience. The best way to connect with the audience is to put oneself into the shoes of his or her audience. With this, Beyonce's Lemonade is an A+ “essay” that has been crafted to perfection. Developing the writing skills needed to advance through anything in life is one of the most important skills learned at college. Sue Laver, director of McGill University’s Writing Centre in Montreal, which teaches for-credit courses in writing explains that “An investment in the time and energy into developing mastery of written communication is probably the best thing you can learn at university” (qtd. In Dixon par. 10). I believe this to be true because writing skills go far beyond writing a paper. The ability to write an effective essay transfer into all aspects of life. Everyone from lawyers to doctors need to be able to write an effective essay because if they can do that, then they hold the ability to transfer their ideas into other minds. To be able to write an effective essay one must be advanced in storytelling abilities. Storytelling is one of the most important skills a person can have. Whether a story deals with a marketing campaign or something that happened to a fictional character, the ability to connect with a person is important. Dr. King, a college professor assigns his students a variety of writing assignments which vary from 1 to 20 page reports. He does this because “Storytelling is so critical, and that’s what often distinguishes people. It doesn’t matter whether you’re sending a series of tweets, or you’re trying to do your latest marketing campaign. It’s about engagement and storytelling” (qtd in Dixon par. 15). If a person can tell an effective story, then they can convince someone (with reason) of anything. The ability to connect with a person is very important anywhere from a judge in a courthouse to an investor during an elevator pitch.
